Courgettes (Cucurbita pepo)

  • Costata Romanesca

    Costata Romanesca CO - ISSA

Popular, Italian heirloom. The dark green fruit are long (can reach up to 60cm and still remain tender), and are distinctively ridged. They taste great and look very decorative when sliced and cooked. Vigourous plants so give them plenty of space, they will produce well through the whole season, outdoors as well as under cover.

  • Blanche de Virginie

Blanche de Virginie CO - ISSA

This one is an old variety from France which our member Eddie Brennan came across on a visit there. The courgettes are a beautiful pale clear green having a delicate flavour with a hint of fruitiness. To appreciate this flavour it is suggested to avoid cooking the courgettes. Cut the vegetable vertically in big slices, grill on both sides briefly and marinate in olive oil with lemon, salt, pepper and fresh coriander and leave in the fridge for 1 hour. The plants themselves grow more like a pumpkin - quite long and vining, and produce three fruiting shoots so give them plenty of room.

  • Genovese

    Genovese - CO - ISSA

Seed given to us by an Italian volunteer, whose father has a small seed saving farm in Tuscany. These courgettes started fruiting early, a more ‘traditional cylindrical green’ fruit than some of our other varieities. Outdoors they also grew well and continue to produce small courgettes into October. Open growing habit for easy harvesting.
