Seed Survey for Growers

Irish Seed Savers have created an online survey, and would like the input of as many growers as possible from all regions of Ireland.

The survey is open to growers of all scales, organic and not organic.

We wish to establish how many growers use seed which is bought or produced in Ireland, the UK, Europe, or Worldwide – and how many growers are traditionally growing from ‘informal seed’ which is either home grown or locally exchanged. This survey is an attempt to understand what our seed buying and growing habits are in Ireland, and assess our self-reliance and import dependence for seed.

The survey has been created as part of the Seed Sovereignty Programme, which aims to promote the development of organic and agro-ecological seed production and supply for all growers across UK and Ireland.

During the past 18 months as programme coordinator at Irish Seed Savers, I have met numerous growers, commercial, domestic and community – as well as food loving consumers and culinary professionals – at various events and trainings throughout Ireland.

Those meetings confirm a well shared interest in the diverse range of quality produce which we can all grow in Irelands abundant farms and gardens. And the interest extends from widely available modern breeds and discoveries, to the many hundreds of time proven yet lesser known heritage varieties.

By establishing current seed use and habits, Irelands current and future seed producers and  suppliers can prepare to supply growers with the seeds, and quality seed production training, that growers want and need for our future.
