March Gardening Tips & Life on the farm.

March is all about seeds, sowing, getting your hands dirty and deciding what to grow for the season ahead. If the weather stays dry we’ll be planting out our first and second early varieties of potatoes  for our conservation KPI’s. In terms of sowing this month, tomatoes, peppers, beets and peas will all be sowed in our polytunnels. We are sowing our perennial flowers that will come up during the Summer months and out in the gardens we are digging over green manures, Rye etc, that will add much needed nutrients to our beds before planting out.

Our supporters orders are still being processed and the amount of people availing of their free seeds grows every year. If you are a supporter and wish to get your seven packs of free seeds please get in touch so we can process your orders before the 05th April deadline.

March can be a daunting time for the novice gardener, there is so much information out there of what to plant, when to plant, harvest, sow but our top tip for March is too ask yourself, “What do you like to eat”, then grow a small selection. It might be tempting to sow a whole packet of peas but you could end up with a freezer full of peas come Autumn. If you have a glass house or polytunnel you can start propagating beans, tomatoes, carrots, courgettes and peppers. Towards the end of the month, you can plant broad beans, salads, kales, carrots & parsnips, directly into the ground. Plant your summer flowering bulbs now but hoe and mulch any weeds now before they get out of control. It’s also a great time to lift up and divide clumped perennials.
