Life on the Farm – May

We have been taking full advantage of the good weather to put up our new polytunnel that was kindly donated, hopefully this will be finished in the next couple of weeks if the weather holds.

Tomatoes, cucumber, beetroot, runner beans, kale, broccoli, winter cabbage and cauliflowers will all be planted in May. Peas that were planted out in April are coming along nicely and our pea fencing will need to be adjusted and supported depending on the rate of growth. We will be hardening off our cabbages and anything that’s going to planted out in May. We are turning over our composts and preparing our beds for our brassica’s. The Irish Elegance sprouts, now in their second year, are flowering and add a magnificent splash of colour in one of our main polytunnels.

In the orchards our young trees are beginning to leaf out and buds have burst on with the new growing season. Our recently potted trees will be hooked up to our irrigation drippers and once they have heeled they will be brought down to our shop for sale during the summer.

Grafted trees are getting close attention at the moment, rootstock shoots are being rubbed off as they appear over the next eight weeks and flower buds are being removed. Both of these tasks concentrate the young tree’s resources into growth rather than fruit production. We spray the leaves with a preventative garlic-based deterrent and keep control flying insects with yellow sticky traps.
