Life on the farm – October

In the orchards we are busy harvesting as many apples as possible for our own Irish Seed Savers apple juice. With over 3,000kg of hand-picked apples, our certified Organic Apple Juice is a unique blend of old world fruits with unsurpassed taste.

We are beginning to tidy up the tree nursery, dismantling the irrigation systems, repairing tools and machinery before storing them away for the winter months and clearing out any unused pots, trays etc to reuse again next year. We are continuing to research the results of our DNA testing project. If you have donated a tree to Irish Seed Savers in the past please contact us at orchards@irishseedsavers.ie as we try to collect all the stories about these trees.

October is the ideal month for planting out garlic and here at Irish Seed Savers we will have different organic varieties for sale in our shop. Find out more by emailing info@irishseedsavers.ie. Spinach, Japanese Greens and overwintering broad beans can be sown early in the month and of course the very reliable lettuces can be planted in the greenhouse.

The majority of our seed harvesting is well under way and our seed team are busy weighing, processing, labeling and drying seed. In the gardens we will be busy autumn sowing spinach, mustard, lettuce and radish. We are storing our carrots and beetroot to protect them from the frost, these will be re-planted next year for their next stage of growth so we can harvest the seed from them. Lastly we are sowing plenty of green manures. Every time a crop is harvested and a bed is cleared; Phacelia, Winter Vetch or Rye gets planted to fill any gap and retain the nutrients with their roots as well as preventing weeds from taking over.
