Sources of Apples in Ireland

Question:

Can you direct me to any research as to the sources of apples in ireland?  What percentage is domestically produced? Is that increasing?  We have an ideal climate for then yet you can rarely buy them?

Answer:

I don’t have information on commercial apple production levels in ireland… Thats more a question for an bord bia or the department of agriculture who might have that oversight.

I would recommend a visit to the apple farm in cahir (check their website there is some interesting info on fruit food miles http://www.theapplefarm.com/environment.htm), also another grower with an interesting website http://www.fruitandvine.com/ both of them are members of the Irish Fruit Growers Association – they’re busy men trying to run their own businesses but are active members of this association so they may not have a lot of time to answer queries but if you visited their market stalls or shops you might be lucky to meet them and learn some more.
