Ban fracking in Ireland

The Irish government are allowing gas companies to test for possible locations for “fracking” operations in the west of Ireland.

Fracking is fracturing of underground shale beds by high-pressure water. It involves disruption of rock causing earth tremors and toxic chemicals are used which then seep into water courses or are released into the atmosphere. Gas companies are now test-drilling in counties Clare, Limerick, Kerry, Cork, Leitrim and Cavan. The possible benefits of shale gas to Ireland are far outweighed by the probable damage to people and environment. The true wealth of Ireland is in it’s friendly people, beautiful landscape and healthy environment. Sustainable tourism offers far greater potential economic benefit in the long term than shale gas ever will. Join the campaign to get fracking banned in Ireland.

Here are some useful links re fracking and I have copied a few words from desmogblog below which seem particularly relevant.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that the unconventional gas boom is happening too fast, too recklessly and with insufficient concern for the potential cumulative impacts on our most critical resources – clean air, safe drinking water and a stable climate.

A number of reports have been released on fracking chemicals and associated health risks, most notably by Dr. Theo Colborn of The Endocrine Disruption Exchange (TEDX). By May 2010 Dr. Colborn had identified 944 chemicals associated with drilling and hydraulic fracturing.”
