Question?
I am looking for a wild crab apple tree Malus sylvestris, the bigger the better. Can you help?
Answer:
the crab apple in our collection is Lough Key Crab – it is a beautiful tree with unusually purple / red / green leaves and lovely pink blossom in spring time. We will have it on sale as a bare-rooted tree in dormant season on a large rootstock so it should be what you are looking for. Our website will hopefully have details of tree stock in Autumn – please check back at that stage…
By the way nick i cannot say for sure the latin name for our crab tree just that it is a crab tree. As to whether it is malus sylvestris i cannot identify for sure as it was just a tree found by a member of the association with no previous history. If i find out more i will include the information with the tree description on our website.
If you have more info about crab apples i would be interested to learn,
