Question?
I am setting up two lines of cordon apple trees, I am planning two rows of six trees. I had hoped to get some Westmeath varieties but you have sold out! Can you recommend a) another nursery where I might possibly get Belvedere House and b) if not can you recommend a similar variety? I am planning to have ideally two trees of a variety so six varieties in the rows, if you could advise on other varieties (4 eater, 2 cooker or dual purpose) that are disease resistant I’d be very grateful. My timing is that I am currently preparing the planting trenches and support frameworks so planting in January/February timeframe.
Many thanks in advance for your response.
As I am renovating a half-acre site, I am also interested in buying one or two quince trees, two plum trees and some soft fruits (yet to determine numbers and varieties of these) so any recommendations you can give would be welcomed.
Answer:
Belvedere House is a variety collected by ISSA from Belvedere house near you and given that name for that reason. It may exist elsewhere under its original name, but our investigations have not yielded this information as of yet. Therefore we cannot recommend any other supplier. However if you are willing to wait another year we can graft one or more for you – to be available in August 2012. If you would like to do so please contact our office by phone and ask for the ‘Graft Request Service’.
We have plum for sale – please see the plum tree section of our online shop, however they are quickly selling out, in which case you may have to wait until next year for a greater choice.
Another good nursery is English’s in Co. Wexford.
Other good lucking colourful eaters in our collection – Lough Tree of Wexford, Kerry Pippin, bloody butcher, gibbons russet, mrs. Perry, ard cairn russet, widows friend, leitrim red, lough key crab as an ornamental not dissimilar to Belvedere Hse …
Our soft fruit will be available for sale soon (they’re potting them now so if you gave it a month and contacted the office I think they will be in stock and could be posted with your tree order – i’m not involved in that section)
Quince, we have none for sale at the moment unfortunately… maybe try englishs too or future forests in Cork…
