Gardening with Children

Occasionally I hear someone say that they would love to get into gardening but they are too busy with their children to find the time. But gardening with children can be a fun family activity as long as you keep a few key points in mind.

1) Give younger children their very own space to muck around in. Don’t have any pre-conceived notions about how it will look.  You’ll be able to work happily in your own part of the garden for minutes at a time while they dig, rake, water, plant, and unplant in their own little garden.

2) Planting in containers is a really good way to start gardening with kids.  They won’t accidentally step on the plants, it’s easy to see the boundaries of what’s ‘their’ plant, and containers are harder to overwater than plants in the earth (most kids love using a watering can).

3) Older children can learn important math and science skills through gardening by counting, measuring, and garden planning. These children can often be good helpers to you in your garden, but they should also have their own space to design and plant with flowers, herbs and vegetables that they choose.

A big part of the pleasure of gardening, for me, anyway is that sense of it being my own little kingdom where I can plant what I like, where I like. Give your kids space for their own gardening worlds and you might be surprised how much time you are able to spend happily gardening yourself!
